Andrea Balency (Mexico) Live at Matterhorn

Andrea Balency live at Matterhorn, SAT 18 FEBRUARY, 11PM. We are over-the-moon-delighted to announce an intimate gig with French-Mexican songstress and multi-instrumentalist Andrea Balency! Andrea, who is based in Mexico, will release her 2nd EP "Lover" as well as her 1st ever LP (by mid-2012), with a series of shows all over the world. She plays at SPLORE on Friday 17th February and at Matterhorn on Saturday 18th February. Don't miss this very special evening. $5 entry after 11pm. The show will start at 11.30pm. With DJ Hopepa and DJ Nick D. BIOGRAPHY: French-Mexican Andrea Balency was born in Paris in 1989 and after a thorough and classical education; she started composing music at the age of 17. Since then, her life experiences from both Argentina and Mexico - where she"s been living since her teens — have influenced her songwriting to the point of not only including traditional French music and "chanson" but also Mexican and Argentina"s folklore. Throughout her short career she also included a wide array of other music styles to her own chemistry, ranging from jazz and sometimes hip-hop to a touch of electronic music which is, slowly, becoming her new favorite experimental ground. In the end, whatever the sound and the language used in her songs, the themes she"s been exploring — such as literature, the sea, time and loneliness — end up bringing back memories of the gray and cold streets of Paris, memories of rain and melancholy and a world where words are mostly vehicles and where feelings take over instead. After a couple of years as a solo artist, her Project became a "Trio" in 2009. Until the end of 2011, the young multi-instrumentalist (Vocals/Loops, Piano, Accordion, Guitar and seemingly a new instrument every other week) will benefit from the strong support of Mike Sandoval - an extremely talented double-bass player who brought a very nice touch of jazzy ambiance to the project - and drummer/percussionist extraordinaire Jerson Vazquez, from the Mexican indie band "Torreblanca". Andrea also joined Juan Manuel Torreblanca for a 2-year stint in which she helped consolidate the band as one of the most respected "art-rock" acts in Mexico. She helped record their most famous EP "Defensa" and was part of the band until the end of 2011, when the release of their 1st album "Bella Epoca" coincided with a severe peak in her own solo project"s activities and a necessity to refocus on a solo career that started booming, first in Mexico and then - most notably - worldwide.

The Eggs

The Eggs is a funk and boogaloo supergroup made up of members from a mix of Wellington bands like Fat Freddy's Drop, Twinset, The Recloose Live Band, and Phoenix Foundation. Initially formed to celebrate the re-opening of the Matterhorn after major refurbishment, The Eggs quickly became a group of heavy demand in Wellington. For the past four years, they have been playing major regional festivals as well as putting on their own gigs, and, of course, their monthly residency at the Matterhorn on the last Saturday of every month.
